Actual Dates and 14C Dates — Michael J. Findley

creationscience graph
Please forgive the oversimplification. But radiocarbon dating, like all radiometric dating, begins with assumptions (beliefs, paradigm) and uses those beliefs as proofs of dates. Science is the accurate examination of the evidence. The evidence of radiocarbon in the remains of organism which were once alive does not produce a date. It produces a 14C:12C ratio. Then assumptions (beliefs, a paradigm) are applied to that ratio. The result is a date. But the science is only the ratio.

Regular 14N in the upper atmosphere is bombarded by cosmic rays and produces 14C, which is unstable and breaks down over time. All living organisms absorb 14C throughout their lifetime through eating and breathing. At death, the organism no longer absorbs 14C. Since 14C is unstable, it begins to break down at a steady rate. This allows us to measure the 14C:12C ratio. By applying assumptions, the end result is a date.

The group of assumptions used by Secular Humanism have a paradigm that assumes the present to be the key to the past. It assumes that formation of 14C:12C was roughly the same as 14C:12C today. Allowing for anomalies, it assumes a constant rate for 60,000 BP (Before Present) years, the maximum accurate date for 14C dating.
The flood model assumptions have a paradigm where the past is vastly different from the present. The flood changed the paradigm dramatically.

Since there are no samples to test before the flood, it is a waste of time to discuss the antediluvian condition. But we accept the standard geologic position that earlier time periods, such as what they called the Cambrian through the Jurassic, had much higher carbon levels than we have today. All of these strata were formed during the flood and represent antediluvian carbon levels.

With higher levels of 12C and 14C formed at a constant rate, the 14C:12C therefor had highly diluted levels of 14C. Therefore, any sample from this time would cause a 14C date to be much older than its actual date because of the increase in 12C, not a reduction in 14C formation.

The flood altered the 14C:12C ratio by saturating the atmosphere with volcanic aerosols laden with vast quantities of 12C. At the same time, the sluice-gates of heaven were opened. 40 days of worldwide torrential rains flushed the atmosphere of any element besides water. This included 14C. Finally, all air-breathing organisms died. The last stage of the carbon cycle, converting 14C back to 14N, did not exist.

It is important to understand that the flood paradigm assumes, just like Secular Humanism does, that 14C formation from 14N was constant throughout earth’s history. What changed, and changed greatly, was the addition of many times the regular 12C in the atmosphere compared to what we measure today. That changed the 14C:12C ratio. As the chart says, the 14C was diluted by many times the amount of 12C we measure today.
So immediately after the flood, 14C was so diluted that a sample from that time measured today would, without correcting for the additional 12C, would date to be 40,000 BP or older.

Following the blue line on the chart, the amount of 12C in the atmosphere decreased to the amount we have measured for centuries since around 600 BC.
Assuming the eruption of Thera coincided with the Exodus, then we can use it to correct 14C dates. Ussher dates the Exodus 1491 BC. 14C dates the eruption of Thera to be 1640 BC for an error of 150 years.

So 14C dates for Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian empire are approximately the same as Ussher’s dates. 14C dates for the Exodus, 1491 BC, are approximately 150 too old. And 14C dates for the flood are tens of thousands of years older than actual dates.

A Simple Overview of the Mechanisms Which Caused the Flood — Post by Michael J. Findley

water drop 25

1) There is more water under the seas than in the seas. The exact amount is not important. It is important to understand that this is considerably more than enough water for a worldwide flood.

2) At the beginning of the Flood, the single antediluvian continent ripped apart rapidly. This had two important results.

3) The antediluvian mountains collapsed. So covering the mountains with water did not require as much water as flood deniers claim.

4) Rifts opened up between the continents. As the rifts widened, they were flooded by ocean water. These rift are now on the sea floor. Today, we know of more than 66,000 km of ridges in the oceans. Modern mountain chains, such as the Cascades (the Cascades are just one example) were also formed by volcanic activity at this time. They are not included in the 66,000 km of rifts (now ridges) from the Atlantic and the Pacific Rim. There are other ridges worldwide, in addition to these ridges and volcanic mountain chains When the rifts are built up with magma, they become mountain ridges.

5) We can measure the eruptive force of the known Mt St Helens eruption. The Yellowstone caldera erupted with 2,500 times the force Mt St Helens either during the Flood or soon after. The ocean rifts were millions of times the force and size of the Yellowstone caldera.

6) Most volcanic activity though starting on land, was quickly flooded by seawater and continued undersea. As depth increases, the ocean water pressure requires greater steam pressure for an eruption to occur. The amount of steam released by undersea volcanic activity increases with depth.

7) The heat from the volcanic activity turns the ocean water which comes into contact with it into steam. This steam saturated the atmosphere, causing rain.

8) Moisture would rise in the atmosphere to the point where it would cool and condense as rain. This rain would cool the lower atmosphere and create a continuous rain cycle. This is a more extreme hydrologic cycle than we know today.

9) Aquatic life and life on the ark survived because they were not in the areas of great volcanic activity. The most extreme volcanic activity was regional, not global. The rifts where the most extreme volcanic activity occurred are the divisions of the new continents, where the continents broke apart.

10) The steam released by undersea volcanic activity was either cooled by the surrounding ocean water or if it reached the surface, it eventually turned to rain. On a miniature scale, modern undersea volcanoes do the same thing.

11) There are tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of volcanic cones today. There are hundreds just on the north rim of the Grand Canyon alone.

12) At the end of the Flood, the valleys sank down and the mountains arose.

13) These forces can easily produce a global flood in 40 days.

14) What do you chose to believe?

anti sam harris ad

Sam Harris has a new book coming out on September 9, called Waking Up.  He claims we can do away with all religion now, and he is going to wake us up to what we should be doing instead of believing in God. But please read the quote in the graphic above, and understand that Harris is NOT interested in giving you a choice or being tolerant if you do want to continue to believe in God or practice a religion. If you would prefer to have a chance to hear evidence about whether, perhaps, Harris is proposing a replacement religion, rather than the end of religion, we suggest you take a look at our book, Antidisestablishmentarian. We quote Harris and hundreds of other Secular Humanists who consider belief a form of insanity, and want to take away your freedom to practice your faith. Below is an excerpt from Chapter Twelve.  Complete sources for quotations can be found in the book.

12. What Is True Science?

Pilate saith unto him [Jesus],What is truth?
John 18:38 KJV

Secularists like Charles Watts and Richard Dawkins affirm a single belief, though they vary in their methods of stating it. They believe that there is no evidence for the truth of any “revealed faith” and that only secularist science should be permitted to exist. People who call a religion “revealed” mean that somehow these people were told what to believe by a non-material means and that there is no outside evidence that the written record, their holy scriptures, are true or authoritative. Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith, said, “We have names for people who have many beliefs for which there is no rational justification. When their beliefs are extremely common we call them ‘religious’; otherwise, they are likely to be called ‘mad’, ‘psychotic’ or ‘delusional’…”1 That’s why they call it revealed faith, because secularists have changed the meaning of the word faith into blindly accepting something without evidence.

Every ancient polytheistic belief system has stories of outrageous behavior by its gods. Buddhism and similar “wisdom” religions have no gods per se but they rely upon “enlightenment” received in an otherworldly state of solitary meditation. Islam was delivered to Mohammed in the form of the Koran. The Latter Day Saints received their revelatory scriptures on golden plates from the angel Moroni. Andy Rooney once said about “revealed faiths” that “Those to whom his word was revealed were always alone in some remote place, like Moses. There wasn’t usually anyone else around when Mohammed got the word, either. Mormon Joseph Smith and Christian Scientist, Mary Baker Eddy, had exclusive audiences with God. We have to trust them as reporters – and you know how reporters are. They’ll do anything for a story.”2

Secularists delight in saying that all religions are equally unreliable, their revelations received in secret. But in the case of Moses, he received a relatively brief commission alone in the desert at the burning bush. The children of Israel did not say they were forced to swallow a tall tale of Moses’ secret revelation. They said, “The LORD our God hath shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire.” Most of the written laws of God were delivered in full view of the entire nation of Israel on Mt. Sinai. “We have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth. Now therefore why should we die?” (Deuteronomy 5:24, 25, KJV) The people, 603,550 fighting men plus women, children and the aged, (Numbers 1:46) were so convinced that God was really there in the thunder and lightning, and that the laws came directly from Him, that they begged Moses to go up on the mountain as their representative, convinced that as frail sinners they could die in the holy presence of God. Every Israelite could see the cloud and pillar of fire in the middle of the camp every day. All of them saw the plagues in Egypt, participated in the Red Sea crossing, watched Pharaoh’s army drown in the Red Sea, heard God speak to Moses at the tabernacle and saw the destruction of those who rebelled. None of these events took place in secret locations or for a chosen few.

In many cases prophets in the rest of the Old Testament spoke openly to the people as God gave them a revelation. “And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came.” (I Kings 18:30, 31, KJV) John the Baptist was in the desert but crowds of people flocked to him. He didn’t collect them after he got some secret revelation.

“Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.” (Matthew 3:5,6, KJV) John the Baptist gives testimony that the miraculous circumstances at Jesus’ baptism occurred in full view of all the people present with him at the event. “And John bare record, saying,’ I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.’ …’Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.’ And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.” (John 1:32-34, KJV).

The teachings and attesting miracles (attesting means proof that He was who He said He was) of Jesus Christ in the New Testament were usually in open places before hundreds or thousands of people. “And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. … And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.” (Mark 6:34, 42-44 KJV)

This lie (teaching in secret) was one of the false charges leveled against Jesus at his mockery of a trial. Though Jesus said very little at these so-called trials, he did answer this one charge. “Jesus answered him, ‘I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.’” (John 18:20,21, KJV)

The Conflict of the Ages Part One The Scientific History of Origins Student

The Conflict of the Ages is a Multi-Part exploration of History, Science and ancient Literature. This first installment covers the concepts of God, time, Creation, physics, cosmology, and specifics about each day of Creation. We make comparisons with ancient sources to see where they agree with the Scriptural account. We reference classic and modern scientific views, exposing errors, preconceptions, presuppositions and falsehoods taught as fact by the mainstream scientific community. God is the first witness and the Bible the first eyewitness account of beginnings and origins.Other ancient documents contain at least some truths and parallel accounts.

The Conflict of the Ages Part II Student: The Origin of Evil in the World that Was

God made everything “very good”, so how did evil come into being? Is “original sin” real or just a myth? Could man talk to animals? There might be myths around the world that echo the creation story, but did ancient people believe in the fall of angels? What does “their eyes were opened” really mean?

The Conflict of the Ages III Student: They Deliberately Forgot: The Flood and the Ice Age

The worldwide Flood is one of the most discounted records in the Scriptures. Yet it is supported around the world by historical accounts. Take a look at feasibility studies on the safety and the stocking of the Ark.

The Geologic Column ought to prove that fossils reveal the age of the earth. They show progression from simple to complex organisms over millions of years. But do they? Take a look at “living fossils.” Meet the extinct creature found only in the “oldest” layers but more complex than “later” life forms. Consider the real conditions that surrounded the Flood and the Ice Age.

Ice Age Civilization — Post by Michael J. Findley

Secularism teaches a very long, slow progress for humans. They believe that the discovery of fire, the wheel, and how to domesticate animals took millennia. With much trial and error, one culture very slowly evolved into another. The evidence, however, shows a very rapid, sudden, even explosive growth of population, civilization, and advanced technology from the very beginning.

Rapid, even explosive growth fits the records available in Hebrew History. Noah and his family left the ark about 2350 BC. (Ussher’s date) Arphaxad was born 2 years later, then Arphaxad and his wife gave birth to Salah 35 later, followed by Eber thirty years later. Thirty-four years later, one hundred one years after leaving the ark, Noah’s great, great, great grandson Peleg was born. And Noah lived another 249 years.

During Peleg’s lifetime men decided to rebel against God by building a tower. Ussher tells us that they went “into the valley of Shinar. Genesis 11:2 Here the people impiously conspired as we find in the book of Wisdom /APC Wis 10:5 to hinder this dispersion of them as commanded by God and began by Noah (as may be gathered from Genesis 11:4,6,8,9 compared together).” [Annals of the World] This took place during Peleg’s lifetime, somewhere between 101 and 340 years after the flood.

Josephus tells us, “Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah…” At this time there was only one language and only one culture. Under Nimrod’s leadership, they hunted down people to work on a tower. This explanation fits in with the rapid dispersment of nomad groups such as the Australian Aborigines and the Clovis people of the Americas. It also helps explain why the oldest artifacts show cave dwellers.

The Lord God intervened in the building of the tower. The languages were confounded and various people groups were divided. After the division, the various language groups began fighting among themselves. Unrepentant, they moved off and founded their own civilizations. Nimrod attempted to recapture these people for his own kingdom. This explains why civilizations suddenly appeared in China, Egypt, Europe, and the Indus Valley as well as Mesopotamia at nearly the same time. It shows why the Sumerian and Akkadian cultures are slightly older than the rest. It also explains why the oldest aspects of human culture are large buildings and warfare.

The tower of Babel and the confusion of languages took place near the beginning of the Ice Age. Meteorologist Michael Ord believes that the physical evidence shows that “the total length of time for a post-Flood Ice Age is about 700 years.”

Using a seven hundred year period for the end of the Ice Age, we look for an event at the end of this time period to indicate the end. The seven years of plenty in Egypt began in 1715 BC [Ussher] when Joseph was vizier of Egypt. That was 737 after the flood ended, according to Ussher’s dating. It would have been several decades after the flood before the ice began to accumulate. While there is nothing which says that the seven years of famine ended the ice age, it was a worldwide famine and the timing fits. The people of all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe in all the earth. Genesis 41:57 NASB

It is a reasonable assumption that Egypt, which depends on the flooding of the Nile, would experience greater harvests as the rapidly melting ice caps added more soil, nutrients and increased the areas flooded. It is another reasonable assumption that the areas formerly covered by ice in central Africa which had supplied the Nile with annual floodwater would be bare and unable to retain both rain water and water from the annual snow thaws. These areas which were barren because they were covered by ice needed to grow vegetation. The vegetation would keep the rain waters which used to be snow from immediately rushing down the Nile and out to sea without providing Egypt with annual floods. It is also possible that is the time Lake Victoria formed. Whatever the reason, at the end of seven years of drought, the Nile River returned to annual flood cycles. These are assumptions, but they are reasonable assumptions based on the facts.

II. The Post Flood World: the Ice Age

“And the Chaldaeans boasted further, that they had observed the Stars 473,000 years; and there were others who made the Kingdoms of Assyria, Media and Damascus, much older than the truth.” Sir Isaac Newton, (emphasis added), The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended printed posthumously by J. Tonson, J. Osborn and T. Longman. 1728, London, England

When Noah and his family left the ark, the volcanic activities of the flood made the oceans warmer than any time in earth’s history. It is probable that near the end of the flood that the mountains rose and the valleys descended.

You covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters were standing above the mountains.
At Your rebuke they fled,
At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away.
The mountains rose; the valleys sank down
To the place which You established for them.
You set a boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they
[the waters] will not return to cover the earth.
Psalm 104:6-9 NASB

As the sea level lowered, ice formed on the rising mountain peaks and the Ice Age began. This began soon after they left the ark; perhaps immediately but decades at the most.

The Collapse of the Peer Review Process — Post by Michael J. Findley

“The real problem for science today is quality control. Peer review has been at the heart of this, but there are too many failures – both in open access and traditional journals – simply to plod ahead with the same system.”

(Quoted from the article, “Open access publishing hoax: what Science magazine got wrong”, by Curt Rice.)

“‘The sting operation on publishers doesn’t point to the real crisis,’ says Curt Rice – ‘the meltdown of the peer review system.’”

An atheist on a site where I frequently participate cited an article in support of his position. I will cover his position and the citation later in this post.

First, I want to thank him for reminding me of an important issue. He cited an article from an open-access publication. Several investigations into the open-access world of peer-reviewed papers have revealed massive fraud. This is also true of traditional scholarly publications, as Curt Rice’s article makes clear. Here is more from Rice:

“Science magazine has published a blistering critique of the most sacred cow of scientific research, namely the peer review quality system. Unfortunately, Science doesn’t seem to have understood its own findings. It proclaims to have run a sting operation, written by ‘gonzo scientist’ John Bohannon, revealing the weaknesses of the relatively new publishing model we call open access. In fact, the Science article shows exactly the opposite of what it intended, namely that we need an even wider use of open access than the one we currently have.”

“Bad work gets published. This is a crisis for science and it’s the crisis that Science shines a sharp light on this week. But Science misread the cause, which was not about making the results of research freely available via open access, but the meltdown of the peer review system. We need change.”

And Rice supports the peer review system.

Secular Humanists love to make loud, long, and repeated complaints that creationist peer-reviewed or refereed journals are not legitimate peer reviews because the reviewers are also Creationists. A “peer-reviewed” article by Petteri Nieminen and Anne-Mari Mustonen, Finnish writers, published in their home country an article entitled “Argumentation and fallacies in creationist writings against evolutionary theory,” published by Evolution: Education and Outreach. was the source of this article linked to by the atheist in an online discussion. He linked it as a citation of legitimate scholarship. While I understand that just writing about this on our blog might give this straw-man fallacy article more publicity than it deserves (there is no such thing as negative publicity), I feel that it is an excellent example of the collapse of the peer review system.

It is written by evolutionists to promote evolution. It was never intended to be unbiased. This is exactly what secular humanists falsely accuse us of. However, it could still be an honest position, if the facts support their case.

Moving on to the content of the article itself, here is the opening:

“Abstract: Background
“The creationist–evolutionist conflict is perhaps the most significant example of a debate about a well-supported scientific theory not readily accepted by the public.
“We analyzed creationist texts according to type (young earth creationism, old earth creationism or intelligent design) and context (with or without discussion of ‘scientific’ data).
“The analysis revealed numerous fallacies…”
It then spends a paragraph defining types of fallacies.
“The prevalence of these fallacies was equal in young-earth creationism and intelligent design/old-earth creationism. The direct and indirect ad hominem were also prevalent in pro-evolutionary texts.”
The conclusion in the abstract then says “the recognition of these fallacies and their dismissal as irrelevant…”

Very serious charges, but nothing to support or even show where they apply to actual creationist statements in the abstract. Here is a faster-loading link to the article.

“Creationist authors and publications were chosen for analysis based on their visibility and impact in social media. (Table 1).”

That is both legitimate and well-stated. Table One begins with Answers In Genesis, Creation Ministries International, Creation Research Society, Institute for Creation Research, Intelligent Design and Evolution Awareness (IDEA Center, and Intelligent Design Network.) These are the major organizations.

The next section includes tables of supposed examples of fallacies. Table Seven contains fallacies by proponents of evolution. Oddly, the tables do not provide enough information to find a specific quote. In the hundreds of references at the end of the article, Journal of Creation is only cited twice and Answers In Genesis only once. The only author I recognized in the tables is John Morris, with two partial quotes. Dr. Morris is the son of the famous Henry Morris. So in spite of publishing a table of leading creationist organizations, they ignore these organizations when choosing quotes.

But the worst part of this article is the entire categorization of partial quotes as fallacies. If a statement is true, and many of the quotes listed in the tables are true, then it is dishonest to claim that they are a fallacy. For example, under the category of “Dishonesty”, they have this partial quote from Dr. John Morris; “‘…if evolutionists really believe what they say or if they are purposively trying to mislead. I suspect there are some of both.’ Morris, 2013”

The complete quote actually makes sense. Here it is. “It makes you wonder if evolutionists really believe what they say or if they are purposively trying to mislead. I suspect there are some of both. Many evolutionists I have met have something in their own past that has turned them away from ‘religion.’”

It is almost humorous that such a dishonest partial quote would be used as an attempt to show Dr. Morris to be dishonest. As you can see in the context, not only is the original honest, it is accurate. Not in every case, but it is a true statement, as Dr. Morris says, with “many evolutionists.”

Table 2 does not have actual quotes, only paraphrases, or what the article’s authors say the creationists mean. Occasionally a word or phrase is included in a quote. For example, under “poisoning the well” is the statement, “Claims of the type: ‘Evolutionists refuse to consider supernatural explanations.’” Every evolutionist I have talked to or read absolutely refuses to consider supernatural explanations for origins of the universe, of the earth, or of life. These are hundreds, perhaps thousands of people. Just one example is Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion. How is a simple statement of fact “poisoning the well?”

The name in the reference column is Walton, 2006. The reference section lists Walton as Walton, D. N. (2006). Poisoning the well. Argumentation, 20, 273–307. This is not a creationist quote, even used out of context. Is all of Table 2 actually quotes from noncreationists masquerading as creationists by making up statements they think creationists would say?

These are simply examples of the lack of scholarship, and, in many places, the lack of basic honesty, forming the substance of this entire article. If this is what passes for peer review, then there is no peer-review system any more.
